SUZAKU

DFFAS autonomous container ship

A 95 m container ship running a 30-company autonomous navigation system that plans routes and avoids traffic itself, while a Fleet Operation Center in Chiba watches weather, traffic and machinery and can take over remotely. It was tested in Tokyo Bay, where about 500 ships pass daily.

Why it matters

The Nippon Foundation calls it the first fully autonomous navigation demonstration in a congested sea area, backed by a shore Fleet Operation Center.

Real-world use

From 26 February to 1 March 2022 the 95 m, 749 GT ship made a 790 km round trip from Tokyo Bay to Ise Bay; Baird Maritime reported it ran without human intervention for 99% of the trip with a crew aboard.
