How much does a robot dog cost?
Compare robot dog costs by purpose, Go2 edition and aibo service plan. Learn why historical Spot prices and missing atlas fields need careful reading.
Robot-dog costs depend on the job and edition. As of October 2026, Unitree Go2 AIR starts at US$1,600 before tax and freight. Companion robots add service questions; industrial systems add task-specific hardware and software. A useful budget separates a current package price from historical figures, optional equipment and ongoing costs.
What kind of robot dog does the price describe?
A robot dog's purpose tells you more about its budget than its shape. Begin with the task: companionship, learning to program a robot, or gathering inspection data.
| Category | Example in the atlas | What to establish before comparing cost |
|---|---|---|
| Companion and play | Sony aibo ERS-1000 | Supported interactions, cloud plan, region and household operating guidance |
| Programmable platform | Go2, with edition-specific access | Required controls, development permissions, battery and accessories |
| Industrial inspection | Boston Dynamics Spot | Measurement task, sensing payload, mission software and support |
These categories follow the selected atlas profiles and the makers' aibo companion description, Go2 edition table and Spot inspection description. They are examples, not a survey of every toy or robot shaped like a dog.
For a household, the question may be whether a robot reacts in an enjoyable way and has supported service where it will live. For a class, it may be whether students can write the needed code. For a facility, it may be whether a sensor can return a useful reading from the required location. Those are separate requirements. A low hardware price alone answers none of them.
Which prices are current, historical or missing?
The checked examples do not form a current market price range. The table separates public amounts verified as of October 2026 from historical or missing evidence.
| Profile and variant | Currency and amount as of October 2026 | Price type and date | Exclusions or limits | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Go2 AIR | US$1,600 | Undated maker table, checked October 11, 2026 | Tax and freight excluded; AIR configuration | Unitree table |
| Spot, base profile | Current amount not verified | Atlas numeric field is historical; current maker page checked October 11, 2026 | No current package total established | Boston Dynamics Spot inspection overview |
| aibo ERS-1000, white US package | US$3,199.99 | Undated live product listing, checked October 11, 2026 | Initial three-year cloud plan included; later renewals and optional accessories separate; taxes not calculated here | Sony US listing |
The aibo amount is a source update to this article. The atlas snapshot has a null numeric field and an approximate amount in a secondary-source note. The current Sony listing gives a specific US package price, so we use that source instead. The atlas itself has not been edited.
A public listing also does not establish delivery to every region. Keep the country, currency, package and source date together when copying a figure into a planning sheet. Record any missing item as unknown rather than adding an unsourced allowance and calling it the full cost.
What changes between Go2 editions?
Go2 editions have different equipment and battery figures, so the starting price cannot stand in for the whole range. This compact matrix comes from Unitree's undated table, checked as of October 2026.
| Edition | Published US price, tax/freight excluded | Battery | Reported runtime | Reported payload / maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIR | $1,600 | 8,000 mAh | About 1–2 hours | About 7 kg / 10 kg |
| PRO | $2,800 | 8,000 mAh | About 1–2 hours | About 8 kg / 10 kg |
| X | $4,500 | 8,000 mAh | About 1–2 hours | About 8 kg / 12 kg |
| EDU | No numeric price listed | 15,000 mAh | About 2–4 hours | About 8 kg / 12 kg |
Unitree says parameters vary with conditions and configuration. The longer endurance belongs to the long-battery configuration in the table. It is not an AIR endurance promise. Likewise, a maximum payload is not the same statement as the maker's ordinary payload figure.
Use the comparison tool with the profile's notes open. The compact atlas fields collect headline values, while the edition table explains their limits. Before using Go2 for a programming task, also check the exact edition's development documentation; a graphical programming feature and access to low-level controls are different questions.
Why is Spot's atlas price historical?
Spot's numeric atlas field is labeled as a past base price, so it should not be presented as a current system budget. This check did not locate an original maker announcement that independently verified the historical amount. We therefore omit that amount rather than repeat it as a current price.
The current Spot page describes the robot, sensing payloads, software and support. It does not give a numeric current list price in the product text we checked as of October 2026. Absence of a public number is an evidence gap, not evidence that the robot is unavailable.
The practical distinction is between the mobile platform and the system that completes a task. Boston Dynamics' Spot payload integration documentation describes work ranging from mounting an inert load to connecting power, data and software services. The specification sheet also describes training and subscription support. Their costs cannot be inferred from a past base amount.
What should a companion-robot budget account for?
A companion-robot budget should separate the robot, the included service period, renewals and optional accessories. For aibo, the verified figures are specific to Sony's US offering as of October 2026.
Sony's white ERS-1000 listing includes the initial cloud period shown above. Its AI Cloud Plan page explains that the plan supports learning, cloud data and app functions. The renewal listing shows US$300 for twelve months as of October 2026. This is a recurring service amount, not another robot.
Sony's US user agreement, effective November 17, 2021 and checked October 11, 2026, limits service eligibility to US residents and excludes Illinois and Baltimore, Maryland. It also makes wireless service dependent on coverage and says future plan prices may differ. These are the maker's stated conditions; this article does not establish eligibility in another country.
Check the package's included charging equipment before adding accessories to a budget. Sony's specification page lists a charging station and related items, but labels its information as current at the time of announcement. The current package is the relevant check for what arrives. Leave optional accessories and repair costs separate until their scope and prices are documented.
Which costs remain outside the base robot?
The remaining cost depends on what the selected package includes and what the task needs. A useful planning sheet has a separate line for each category below.
| Budget item | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Hardware and battery | Exact edition, included charger, battery configuration and documented replacement options |
| Sensors and mounting | Required measurement, compatible payload, power needs and attachment method |
| Software and service | Included features, development access, renewal period and region |
| Setup and integration | Who will build or configure the workflow and what systems it must connect to |
| Training and support | Included guidance, operator training, repair route and support terms |
This is a planning framework, not a claim that every robot adds a separate fee for every row. The Go2 table, aibo service pages and Spot payload documentation above show why those questions matter, but do not supply a universal ownership-cost formula.
Write the intended task in plain language before filling in those lines. Robot Match can help organize the task and environment. Keep unknown costs visible. A complete-looking total with guessed inputs is less useful than an honest partial budget.
How much price coverage does the atlas have?
As of October 2026, the robot-dog atlas view corresponds to 82 quadruped records in the checked machine data snapshot. Of those, 22 have numeric price fields and 60 have null fields. The commercial subset has 36 records: 13 numeric prices and 23 nulls.
| Snapshot group, as of October 2026 | Records | Numeric price field | Null price field |
|---|---|---|---|
| All quadruped records | 82 | 22 | 60 |
| Records labeled commercial | 36 | 13 | 23 |
These are original catalog-field counts from public/data/machines.json, not a census of the market or a set of verified current prices. Historical records stay in the full group. A commercial label does not make a past price current, and a null field does not mean zero cost.
To reproduce the count, select records whose kind is quadruped, then count numeric and null priceUsd values. For the second row, also require status to be commercial. The new aibo source finding does not change this frozen snapshot's count. That is why we do not calculate a market average or price range from these fields.
How we checked this
We checked public/data/machines.json at revision 7bce4d9bffb3dab3e37d164920b0b5d24cb1095c on October 11, 2026. We matched the featured robot and maker IDs, read their price and component notes, reproduced the quadruped counts, and opened the primary pages linked beside the claims. Prices are US dollars where an amount is shown.
This is a source comparison, not a hands-on test. Maker pages without a publication date are labeled by access date; announcement-time specifications are kept distinct. Current packages, prices and service terms need another check near publication. Statistics only. No affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement.

Frequently asked questions
Is the starting price the same for every Go2 edition?
No. As of October 2026, Unitree lists AIR at US$1,600, PRO at US$2,800 and X at US$4,500, excluding tax and freight. EDU has no numeric price in the checked maker table.
Is the price in Spot's atlas record a current price?
No. The record labels its numeric price as historical. We did not verify a current public list price from Boston Dynamics as of October 2026.
Does aibo have a recurring service cost?
Sony's US white ERS-1000 listing includes an initial three-year AI Cloud Plan. As of October 2026, Sony lists a subsequent twelve-month renewal at US$300; future fees may change.
Can a programmable robot dog replace a household pet?
A programmable platform and a companion robot serve different purposes. Compare the maker's intended use, operating requirements and supported interactions; a dog-shaped body does not establish household suitability.
Does a missing atlas price mean a robot is free?
No. A null price field means the snapshot has no numeric price in that field. It does not establish cost, availability or a complete system budget.
