THEMIS

A full-size electric biped from the UCLA RoMeLa spin-off Westwood Robotics, built on its own back-drivable BEAR actuators and aimed at general work such as housekeeping and handling hazardous waste. Height, DoF and speed here are the THEMIS V2 figures (April 2025); a later Gen 2.5 adds 7-DoF arms, a new operating system called AOS and the ability to handle objects while walking.

What’s inside

The parts the company has talked about publicly.

Movement
Walks on legs · 40 joints
Chip
Jetson Orin NX (NVIDIA)Two Jetson Orin NX 16 GB modules serve as vision computers in the head and body.
Actuators & motors
Westwood's own back-drivable BEAR proprioceptive actuators; Gen 2.5 adds 'Mountain BEAR' hip actuators with about twice the torque and less heat, and liquid cooling on the hip yaw/roll/pitch and knee actuators. Gen 2.5 has 42 DoF: 6 per leg, 7 per arm, 7 per hand and 2 in the head.
Hands
Two 7-DoF hands; arms carry over 5 kg each at peak (Gen 2.5); whole-robot payload 15 kg.
Sensors & vision
ZED 2i stereo camera in the head and ZED X Mini stereo camera on the body; tactical-grade 9-axis main IMU (V2 used a MicroStrain 3DM-CV7-AHRS); speaker and microphone; force sensing.
Compute
Main computer with AMD Ryzen 7 7840 CPU and Radeon 780M graphics, 32 GB DDR5; two NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX 16GB vision computers (head and body).
Battery & power
Two 259.2 Wh hot-swappable packs for about 120 minutes walking; 302 Wh extended-range packs give up to 180 minutes.
AI & software
Model-based control enhanced with reinforcement learning; Westwood's AOS operating system lets users drive it through LLMs, pseudo-code and AI-assisted teleoperation; V2 was built on ROS.
Other details
Gen 2.5: 1.6 m and 36.5 kg, 5 km/h walking (V2 was quoted at up to 10 km/h), wireless e-stop, structure redesigned for about 40% more impact resistance. Sold on enquiry with 6 months of support.
