Why it matters

Running at 9 km/h, hopping on one leg and signing with 13-DOF hands, it was the most capable humanoid of its era; Honda claimed a first in autonomous behaviour control.

Real-world use

Performed daily at Miraikan and Honda showrooms until it retired from regular shows on 31 March 2022.

What’s inside

The parts the company has talked about publicly.

Movement
Walks on legs · 57 joints
Actuators & motors
More than 26 DC and brushless DC motors driving 57 degrees of freedom (head 3, arms 7 each, hands 13 each, hip 2, legs 6 each) per the strengthened legs with a wider range of movement.
Hands
Compact multi-fingered hands with 13 degrees of freedom each and independently controlled fingers; a tactile sensor in each palm and a force sensor in each finger.
Sensors & vision
Visual and auditory sensors support face and voice recognition; tactile sensors in the palms and force sensors in the fingers support dexterous grasping (Honda, 2011).
Compute
Honda-developed autonomous behavior control system integrates sensor inputs, estimates the surrounding situation, and determines the robot's next action (Honda, 2011).
Battery & power
51.8 V lithium-ion; about 1 hour of operation.
Materials & build
Magnesium-alloy frame covered with a plastic resin shell.
AI & software
VxWorks real-time operating system with Honda's control software; autonomous behaviour control that predicts movement without an operator, face and multi-speaker voice recognition, and object recognition from vision plus touch (Honda).
Other details
130 cm and 48 kg; ran at 9 km/h, could make sign language and open a bottle and pour a drink.
